January IDC Meeting Notes

January 30th, 2006 4:30 pm

The meeting was opened at 7:39pm at the Julia Carson Government Center in Indianapolis by club President Ken Kern. It was noted that the IDC is beginning it’s 105th consecutive year. Last month’s secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were typed up and handed out and accepted as presented.

This month’s guest speakers were supposed to be State Sens. Vi Simpson and/or Robert Young, but unfortunately last minute cancellations changed the program to include guest speakers Jeff Harris and Angie Nusmeyer. Jeff is Deputy Chief of Staff and Press Secretary for the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus. Angie works for the Indiana Democratic Senatorial campaign. The topic was what is in store for the 2006 legislative session.

Take Action: Stop Anti-Worker Bill in Indiana

As many of you may know, there’s a push in the Indiana legislature to try to make Indian a a “right to work” state, which would hurt workers in Indiana but reducign the power of workers to organize.

From the letter Working Families is urging people to send:

Workers in states with so-called “right to work” laws have a consistently lower quality of life than those in other states–lower wages, higher poverty, less access to health care–according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Census Bureau.

This is an important issue (one of many we’ll see in the 2006 session). If you’re interested in fighting this legislation (H.B. 1019), click the link above to write a letter to Speaker Brian Bosma and Rep. Gerald Torr. I would also suggest writing your own state rep about this on your own.

Former Congressman Andy Jacobs at Hamilton County Club

January 23rd, 2006 6:18 am

This came from the Hamilton County Club.

Dear Hamilton County Democratic Club Members and Friends,

This month is a very special month for the Hamilton County Democratic Club.
We will host a talk by Congressman Andy Jacobs, one of Indiana’s most
effective and beloved Democrats.

Congressman Jacobs represented Indiana districts 10 and 11 for fifteen
terms. Currently, he lectures on the state and national level regarding
issues that touch middle America and its abuse by the unscrupulous and
uninformed. Andy is currently an IUPUI adjunct professor of political
science, teaching courses on American politics and the US Congress. Few have
Mr Jacob’s breadth of knowledge and insight into these Institutions

Signed copies of Andy’s latest book, _The 1600 Killers_, will be available
by lottery to 20 lucky loyal Democrats.

Please do join us on January 25, 6:30PM, at the Fox and Hound restaurant
located just south of Lowes, at the intersection of 146th Street and
Greyhound Pass in Carmel (from the 31, turn east on Greyhound Pass).

Best wishes to all.

Sincerely,
Jason M. Kelly
President, Hamilton County Democratic Club
